Thumbs up, thumbs down

January 3, 2014
Estherville News

Thumbs up to the Iowa Legislature for reducing the property tax burden on commercial property owners. Commercial property owners have until Jan. 15 to apply for the new tax credit in their counties. The rollback calls for a assessing commercial properties at 95 percent of valuation retroactive to last Jan. 1 and 90 percent starting this Jan. 1.

Hopefully, our lawmakers at the state level and elected and appointed officials locally will be able to deal with the impact on local government without a great deal of turmoil.

Thumbs up to the young ladies who participated in the babysitting clinic Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Estherville. This is a valuable session that will teach these girls how to properly care for children and deal with emergencies.

Thumbs up to Eric Anderson and Jenna Pollock of the Emmet County Conservation Board for offering the winter survival workshop for area youth Today. A thumbs up should also go to the youth participating. Hopefully, they'll never need to use the skills that they learned. If they do, then at least they'll have them.

Thumbs up to Emmet County Wellness Coalition members meeting 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative board room. The Coalition is working hard with the Regional Wellness Center and Avera Holy Family Hospital on the Lifestyle Challenge at the RWC.

Thumbs up to everyone who used a designated driver on New Year's Eve. That was the smart thing to do.

Thumbs down to those who didn't.

Thumbs down to the weather that wreaked havoc on people's plans - most notably the Danish Fellowship's plans for its yearly holiday gathering in Ringsted Sunday. Hopefully, our Danish friends in Ringsted will find an alternate date to enjoy their havarti, rollipulse and maybe just a teeny bit of akavit.

Thumbs up to Emily and Ella Regelstad for donating a portion of their hair to others who need. Emily donated 10 inches of hair to Locks of Love while Ella donated 8 inches of hair to Wigs for Kids.

Thumbs up to all those who survived both the Christmas and New Year's Day holidays. Here's looking for a great 2014.
