Estherville News

Thumbs up to the Estherville Lincoln Central Education Association and the Estherville Lincoln Central Board of Education for a cordial opening evening of negotiations Monday night at the ELC High School library. It was an excellent way to set the tone for fruitful negotiations as both sides work to set a fragile balance between quality education for students and being good stewards for taxpayers. Good luck to both sides.

Thumbs up to RIDES, the regional transit authority, for slugging through a couple down years. Fortunately, RIDES had the vision to anticipate difficult times and set aside enough money to make it through. With new laws restricting the length of time our seniors can renew their driver's licenses, having regional transit available is more important than ever, especially at the reasonable prices RIDES offers. For schedule information, call 1-800-358-5037.

Thumbs up to the Estherville Lincoln Central jazz band on a wonderful performance Thursday at the Iowa Lakes Community College jazz contest. A thumbs up should also go to Iowa Lakes Community College for sponsoring this great event.

Thumbs up to YMCA Kinship for taking a proactive role in dealing with issues that affect all teens. Growing up is a bigger challenge than ever, and Kinship mentors are making a huge difference in young people's lives. If you have what it takes to be a Kinship mentor, call Melony Renze at 712-209-1576 or e-mail her at

Thumbs up to the Emmet County Izaak Walton League as it plans its annual gun show Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 1-2 at the Estherville Elks Lodge. This is a great way to break the mid-winter blahs and see a lot of interesting firearms and other outdoor gear. It's also a major fundraiser for the Ikes which sponsors many outdoor youth events.

Thumbs up to Esthervile Lincoln Central senior Blake Gjerde on earning his 100th career victory. With fellow senior Oscar Ramirez surpassing the milestone earlier this season, the Midgets now have two members of the 100-win club.

Thumbs up to the Estherville Lincoln Central girls basketball team for earning their first win of the season.?It takes perserverance when things don't go you well.
