Lakers wrap up dual schedule with a win

February 7, 2014
By David Swartz - Managing Editor , Estherville News

Wrestling their second dual in as many nights with three weights open once again, the 14th-ranked Iowa Lakes Wrestling Team prevailed again-this time with a 34-24 victory over the Northwestern Junior Varsity.

"Again the guys had to fight hard as we gave up three weight classes again due to injury," said Iowa Lakes coach Cody Alesch. "We need to get healthy for regionals next week so it is the right move for our team.

"Tonight we only lost 1 contested match and we were capable of winning that match," he continued. "It was good to see the guys end the regular season strong especially at home. "

The dual started with pins by eighth-ranked Freddie Rodriguez at 125 pounds and by Juan Torres at 133 pounds.

The Lakers forfeited at 141 and 149 pounds with Tyler Ellwood (157) winning by technical fall. The Lakers forfeited at 165. Third-ranked Brandon Sorenson won an 11-5 decision and then Jimmy Connaghan (184) won a 12-2 major decision.

The loss came at 197 pounds where Cameron Foucher lost by fall.

But Davion Franklin, ranked 12th at 285, ended the night with the Lakers' third pin to seal the win.

The Lakers end the year with an 8-3 dual meet record and now prepare for regionals coming up Feb. 16 at the Spencer Fieldhouse.
