Indian boys wrap up Lakes play

SPENCER, SPIRIT LAKE - The Spirit Lake boys wrapped up the Lakes Conference schedule with a win over Spencer, 44-32, on Friday, Feb. 7, and a 62-45 loss to LeMars on Tuesday.

The Indians put it all together in the final period against Spencer, outscoring the hosts 16-4 in the final period to pull out a 44-32 victory.

The Tigers led 10-6 after one quarter with Spirit Lake lead 20-15 at halftime.

Alec Henrickson led Spirit Lake with 17 points, most of them coming from the free throw line where he was 10-of-12. Billy Brown contributed 11 points along with three assists. Trevor Smith had six points and eight rebounds. Alex Pringnitz finished with five points, Sam Harms had four and Caleb Jennings had one.

Blake Illg and Matt Finnern led Spencer with nine points apiece.

Against LeMars, the Indians led 14-12 after one quarter and trailed the Bulldogs 27-25 at the break. But LeMars took the lead for good in the third quarter, 47-39, and limited the Indians to six points in the final period.

Alec Henrickson led the Indians with 19 points while Billy Brown had 10.

Jake Irwin led LeMars with 19 while Tyler Paulson had 14 and Tyler Borschers had 13.

Spirit Lake (13-6 overall, 8-6 in the Lakes) wrap up the regular season with two games against Minnesota teams. The Indians host Worthington on Saturday and are on the road against Jackson County Central on Tuesday.

Indians unable to complete rally

SPENCER - Spencer jumped out to a 20-10 first-quarter lead against Spirit Lake and held on after a furious rally to defeat the Indians 57-53 on Friday. Feb. 7.

The Tigers led 36-25 at halftime and 44-32 after three quarters with the Indians out-scoring the hosts 21-13 in the final frame.

Emma Dau led Spirit Lake with 19 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Joie Veldman tossed in 15 points and Bailee Newman had eight. Bailey Loveal had six points and 10 rebounds. Carly Ites had four points and Katy Brevik had one.

The Indians shot well from the field, making 18of-34, but were just 12-of-24 from the free-throw line.

Kirsten Martindale led Spencer with 22 points and nine rebounds.

Spirit Lake ended the regular season with a 71-69 win over LeMars on Tuesday. The Indians led 14-13 after one quarter and 38-32 at halftime, but the Bulldogs rallied to take a 53-44 lead to start the final period.

Spirit Lake (16-5 overall) hosts Estherville Lincoln Central at 7 p.m., today for the first round of the Class 3A regional playoffs.
