The Estherville City Council Monday spent time on discussing a proposed agreement between Estherville and the City of Armstrong for law enforcement assistance.
Estherville City Administrator Penny Clayton said the mayor of Armstrong and the chief both came to visit her along with Estherville Police Chief Eric Milburn and Captain Brent Shatto.
Armstrong officials are seeking backup services when their one full-time officer, Chief Cliff Merrill, is off duty.
Clayton said the first question the council had to determine is, "Does Estherville want to provide service to Armstrong?"
Council reviewed a draft agreement in which Armstrong would pay Estherville $200 per month plus the actual cost of expenses incurred by Estherville.
Estherville officers would not patrol Armstrong, just help out in emergency response situations.
Councilman Gene Haukoos said he wouldn't want the arrangement to be permanent, but would be willing to help until Armstrong decides what it wants to do.
Milburn said he would be "shocked" if Estherville officers were called to Armstrong more than 15 times a year.
Council decided they wanted to talk directly to an Armstrong official or officials before making a decision.
