She received her education in Estherville schools, graduating from Estherville High School in 1943. Following graduation she went to work for Western Union, serving in Sioux City, Chicago and Boston.

On March 3, 1945, Lillian was united in marriage to Bill Howard at Beaufort, S.C., where Bill was stationed in the US Marine Corps. In March 1946, they came back to Emmet County and began farming in Swan Lake Township where they raised their family. In February 1975 they moved into Estherville. For over 20 years they spent winter months at Mesa, Ariz.

Lillian was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Gruver until it closed, then transferred her membership back to the First Presbyterian Church in Estherville. At Gruver, she was active in the women's groups.

She was a leader of the Swan Lake Better Luck 4-H Club for 25 years. She made many of her children's clothes as they grew up, and taught many young ladies to sew.

She made quilts for many years, giving them as gifts to family members, selling others at craft shows. Other hobbies she enjoyed over the years were ceramics, silver work, painting, reading and playing cards.

Left to cherish her memory are her six children: Mary (Michael) Fox, Woodward, Okla.; Jeanne (David) Egeland; Lois (Walt) Jensen, Estherville; Glenn (Bonnie) Howard, Dolliver; Diana (Skip) Clabaugh; and John Howard, Estherville; 22 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, one sister Mary Mountain, Mitchell, S.D., brother-law Donald Howard and many other relatives and friends.
