Lakers unable to take second game from Trojans

MASON CITY - After getting trounced 12-2 in five innings by North Iowa Area, Iowa Lakes pounded out 17 hits in the second game of a ICCAC doubleheader.

But it still wasn't enough as the Lakers came up short 10-9 in the contest.

The first game was all NIACC as the Trojans broke a 2-2 tie with 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Lakers mustered just one two-out hit in the top of the fifth as finished with three hits for the game-one each by Sierra Gudvangen, Jess Abrahamson and Kylee Pospisal. Pospisal had both RBIs.

Kimberly Frank took the loss as she gave up 12 runs with just six earned. Frank finished with four strikeouts and four walks while giving up 11 hits.

In the second game, Iowa Lakes took the lead in both the top of the sixth and seventh innings, but the host Trojans pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

Jordyn Derflinger went the distance as she gave up 10 runs (seven earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Frank and Kristi Larson each went 4-5 at the plate while Nyna Tendal, Kristen King and Jamie Bascom each had two hits.

Iowa Lakes (15-25 overall) finishes the season with a four-game homestand today and Sunday with Des Moines Area coming to town today and Southwestern on Sunday.

Lakers go 2-2 earlier in the week

The Iowa Lakes softball team lost a pair of games to Marshalltown and then swept a couple of non-conference games against the Northwestern Junior Varsity this past week.

In the first game against Marshalltown last Saturday, the Lakers nearly rallied from an 8-3 deficit with four runs on five hits in the top of the seventh.

Jordyn Derflinger took the loss as she gave up eight runs (five earned) on 10 hits with one strikeout and five walks.

The Lakers finished with nine hits with two each by Kimberly Frank, Jess Abrahamson and Kylee Pospisal. Abrahamson had three RBIs and Pospisal had two.

In the second game, Marshalltown defeated the Lakers 9-1 in five innings. The Lakers' lone run came in the top of the fifth as Kristen King's sacrifice fly scored Pospisal.

The Tigers only had six hits, but drew a combined 10 walks off of pitchers Kimberly Frank and Nyna Tendal.

Iowa Lakes mustered just two hits-one by Kimberly Larson and one by Salina Gonzalez.

In the first game against Northwestern JV on Tuesday, the Lakers scored five runs in the top of the fifth to build a 7-2 lead, but had to hold on for an 8-7 victory.

Iowa Lakes mustered 14 hits with three each by Sierra Gudvangen and Frank while Tendal and pospisal each had two. Gudvangen, Abrahamson and Tendal each had two RBIs.

Tendal earned the win on the mound as she gave up seven runs (four earned) on eight hits with four walks and one strikeout.

In the second game, the Lakers pounded out 18 hits,taking the lead for good with an eight-run third inning that included triples by Larson and Pospisal. Tendal and Tarah Hunt also had triples in the contest. The Lakers won 13-8.

Larson, Abrhamson, Tendal and Hunt each had three hits. Larson and Derflinger each had three RBIs while Pospisal and Hunt each had two.

Derflinger earned the win as she gave up seven runs (three earned) on five hits with noe strikeouts or walks. Frank pitched four innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
