In a tight battle for second place, the Spirit Lake-Okoboji Boys Tennis Team edged past LeMars and Storm Lake to finish with 11 points and come in behind Lakes Conference Champion Spencer at the conference tournament on Saturday.
"All the teams at the tournament knew that Spencer would be the favorite to win, and the competition for second place would be extremely tight, and it was just that," said Spirit Lake-Okoboji coach Dan Taylor. "The way we placed our players in the individual events was different than most of the schools. Most of the teams loaded up the singles, putting their top two players in the #1 and #2 singles divisions. We, however, went strong in doubles, and while Spencer was just too tough for anyone to make a run at them, I believe going strong in doubles is what made it possible for us to nudge ahead of the rest of the pack and take second as a team."
LeMars finished third with 10 points followed by Storm Lake with nine, Cherokee with seven and Estherville Lincoln Central with five.
SL-O's Michael O'Brien and Ryle Smith posted a 4-1 record on the day to place first at the No. 1 doubles bracket and earn first team all-conference honors. Will Fuelberth and Jason Thorn posted a 5-0 record on the day to win the No. 2 doubles bracket to earn honorable mention all-conference.
In singles play, Hunter Andreason placed fifth with a 1-4 record and Nick Goodenow went 1-4 in the No. 2 singles to also place fifth in that bracket.
Each match win counted toward a team point.
