ESTHERVILLE - Memorial services for Maurice Thompson, 85, of Estherville will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church in Estherville with Pastors Chad Ensz and Kennen Barber-Ensz officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held at East Side Cemetery in Estherville with military graveside rites by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91.

He died Friday, May 16, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville.

Maurice Ray Thompson, the son of Theodore and Hazel (Hoffman) Thompson, was born May 23, 1928, in Silver Lake Township, Minn.

He graduated from Gruver High School. Maurice later attended AIB Business College in Des Moines. Maurice served in the United States Marine Corps from 1946-1948 and the United States Army from 1950-1952. Maurice also served in the Iowa National Guard for 28 years following active duty.

On Feb. 17, 1951, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Ross in Estherville. Maurice served as manager of People's Natural Gas and later Great Plains Natural Gas Company for 40 years. Following his career as natural gas manager, Maurice retired in 2007 from Iowa Lakes Community College.

He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church serving as Elder, Deacon and Trustee; American Legion Post #91 and VFW Post #3388 all of Estherville.

Left to cherish Maurice's memory is his wife, Dorothy; children, Gary (Christine) Thompson of St. Cloud, Minn.; Nancy (Andy) Peterson of St. Paul, Minn.; Craig (Carla) Thompson of Monument, Colo.; grandchildren, Ben (Jannie) Thompson; Eric (Andrea) Thompson; Zach Thompson; Megan (Justin) Tomlinson; Adam (Anna) Peterson; Ted Thompson; Emma Thompson; great-grandchildren, Kai Thompson; Keelan Thompson; Ava Thompson; Sophia Tomlinson; two sisters, Dorothy Brandt and Maxine Carlson.
