Indians down Okoboji, 13-1

SPIRIT LAKE - Spirit Lake sophomore Bailee Newman helped her team to a 13-1, four-inning victory over Dickinson County rival Okoboji in the season opener on Tuesday.

Newman gave up just one unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts on the night. At the plate, she led off the night with a solo home run and finished 3-3 with four RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.

Whitlee Reitz finished 2-2 while Caitlyn Roberts, MacKenzie Thate, Maddie Richter and Kayla Herrig each had one hit. Herrig had two RBIs and Richter and Paige Petersen each had one.

Newman strikes out 12 in win

NEWELL - Spirit Lake's Bailee Newman struck out 12 batters in a two-hit, 2-0 shut out against Newell-Fonda on Wednesday. The sophomore pitcher also walked just one batter on the night.

The Indians scored both runs in the first inning with the rest of the game going quickly.

Kelsey Delperdang hit a one-out single and then scored on a triple by Mackenzie Thate. Thate scored on a hit by Carly Ites. Ites finished 2-3 while Delperdang, Thate and Whitlee Reitz each went 1-3.

Spirit Lake holds on vs. Orabs

SPIRIT LAKE - The Spirit Lake baseball team opened its season edging past Sheldon 6-5 on Tuesday. The Indians jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first three innings with three more in the fifth to take a 6-1 edge.

Sheldon chipped at the lead, but couldn't get over the top.

Tony Eckert picked up the win on the mound as he pitched six innings, struck out nine batters, walked four and allowed two earn runs. Cole Tate closed out the seventh, striking out one batter while giving up a pair of runs.

At the plate, Gavin DeVos was 2-3 with an RBI, Nile Skogerboe was 1-2 with an RBI and Eckart was 1-1 with two RBIs.
