North Union board approves student handbook changes

By Michael Tidemann - Staff Writer , Estherville News

The North Union Board of Education Monday night officially approved changes in the student handbook, one of which bars students with failing grades from accessing Apple applications.

Principal Robert Zotz reviewed a three-check model followed each quarter in which students failing a class lose their ability to access Apple Store applications. As of the fourth quarter last year, students with a failing grade lost the ability to access the applications. Other violations resulting in loss of the privilege are technology misuse, suspensions, excessive tardiness and good conduct violations.

One thing added to the good conduct policy Zotz noted was misuse of alcohol, tobacco or a controlled substance. Students would be required to attend a school-approved counseling program at the expense of the student or family.

Possible loss of homecoming privileges or prom (for the third or fourth good conduct violation in a student's high-school career) were also added.

The board later in the meeting approved the changes Zotz noted.

The board also held a public hearing and sold two school buses to School Bus Sales, a 2007 International originally owned by Armstrong-Ringsted for $13,000 and a 2005 Thomas Freightliner originally owned by Sentral for $2,500. The district now leases its buses from the same company.

In other business, the board:

n Appointed Erin Rogers as board secretary.

n Appointed Rick Engel as board attorney.

n Approved official depositories and limits.

n Approved free and reduced lunch and breakfast programs.

n Approved North Union board policies.

n Approved the North Union pre-school handbook.

n Approved the North Union elementary student handbook.

n Approved Iowa Association of School Boards legislative priorities.

n Approved the Title I parental involvement policy.

n Approved the Title I parent-student-teacher compact.

n Approved contracts and resignations.

The next board meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25 at Sentral School with a building walk-through at 5:30.
