Thumbs up, thumbs down

Thumbs up to Iowa Lakes Community College on a great jazz festival and convocations in both Estherville and Emmetsburg this week. Between the jazz festival, the jazz contest held during the school year and the jazz camp held every June, the college is really making a name for itself for bringing jazz to the college and its students. A huge pat on the back has to go to Carol Ayres and Brett Fuelberth for all they do for the music program at the college. Thanks should also go to all the Iowa Lakes students who help out at these events, making them a success.

Thumbs up to the Estherville Fire Department on getting its new rescue truck up and going. This truck will actually carry equipment previously carried by several other trucks, making for a far more efficient use of vehicles. The rescue truck will also be able to be directed to specific uses, providing the right people at the right time to those in need.

Thumbs up to Estherville Rotarians who will clean up a two-mile stretch of Highway 9 east of Estherville Thursday. The Iowa Department of Transportation's Adopt-a-Highway program is a great way for any school or nonprofit group to raise public awareness of the good things they're doing and to build goodwill.

Thumbs up to Estherville Lincoln Central High School students performing in the musical Once Upon a Mattress. The musical will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8 at Roosevelt Auditorium.

Thumbs up to Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce and Friends of Fort Defiance volunteers who hosted the Fright Hike Halloween night on the Whitetail Ridge interpretive trail. This is a great event and a great place to hold it.

Thumbs up should also go to all the people who gave treats to kids Halloween night. It's things like that which give a community a special flavor of friendliness and warmth.

Thumbs up to the area football teams that qualified for the playoffs and the fans that traveled to support them. Also thanks to all the fans who supported their sports teams this fall.

Thumbs down to all the negative polticial campaign ads. Enough already.
