LeMars hands ELC a second Lakes loss

In a battle of rated teams, Class 2A No. 9 Estherville Lincoln Central came up on the short end of a 2-1 score against Class 3A No. 7 LeMars at Hess-Limberg Field in Estherville on Friday.

ELC starter Evan Olesen pitched a solid game, giving up just five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

However, LeMars strung three of those hits together in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead.

ELC scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Olesen hit a one-out single and scored on a double by Lucas Gardner. The next two ELC batters both grounded out to the shortstop.

In the top of the seventh, Brian Egeland came into pinch hit for Seth Loock and drew a two-out walk. But Trey Jacobson followed with a grounder to the Bulldog shortstop, who flipped the ball to second to take the force and end the game.

ELC also had five hits with Olesen going 2-3 while Bennett Loock was 1-2 with three stolen bases, Gardner was 1-3 and Jacobson was 1-4.

LeMars' Gabe Eckstaine was on the other side of the duel as he gave up one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks in earning the victory.

ELC (11-3 overall, 3-2 in the Lakes Conference) is at Cherokee tonight. The Midgets host Forest City on Tuesday.

ELC shuts down Algona

Hunter Wheatley and the Estherville Lincoln Central defense shut down visiting Algona in a non-conference game on Thursday.

Wheatley pitched all seven innings and gave up just two hits with six strikeouts and two walks to earn the victory.

Offensively, ELC finished with 10 hits. ELC scored its first run in the second when Lucas Gardner singled and moved around to third on a pair of wild pitches before scoring on Trevor Friesner's sacrifice fly to right field. Trey Jacobson scored in the third inning, coming home on an RBI single by Evan Olesen. ELC put up three insurance runs in the fifth. Jacobson reached on an error and scored on an RBI double by Jacob Bosch. With two outs, Gardner hit an RBI triple to score courtesy runner Alec Heifner. Gardner scored as Bennett Loock reached on a slow roller down the third base line.

Jacobson finished 3-4 while Olesen was 2-3 and Bosch, Gardner, Loock, Wheatley and Seth Loock each had a hit.

ELC?bounces back with win over E'Hawks

EMMETSBURG - Estherville Lincoln Central bounced back from Tuesday's disappointing loss to Spirit Lake by clobbering Emmetsburg 10-2 on Wednesday.

ELC had built a 5-0 lead before scoring five more in the top of the sixth inning.

The E'Hawks extended the game by scoring their only two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Lucas Gardner struck out 10 batters in the victory with Brian Egeland closing out the final inning.

At the plate, Gardner helped his cause with two hits and two RBIs.
