Clare E. Skattebo June 3, 1928 - Aug. 15, 2017

Funeral services for Clare E. Skattebo, 89, formerly of Ringsted, will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 20, at Wallingford Lutheran Church in Wallingford with Pastor Christine Lang officiating. Interment will be at Wallingford Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Sunday at Wallingford Lutheran Church.

Clare E. Skattebo was born on the Skattebo Family Farm June 3, 1928, to Eda Osher Skattebo and Clarence I. Skattebo, of Wallingford. He was such a tiny baby and not expected to live, so was baptized at home.

Clare attended a one-room country school for eight years and graduated from Estherville High School in 1947. He attended Waldorf Jr. College for one year and was a member of the concert choir directed by Odvin Hagen. September of 1950 he entered the Army, where he served for two years.

March 3, 1951, he was united in marriage to Maxine L. Eaton, of Ruthven, at The Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Augusta, Ga.. Clare was stationed in the Army at Camp Gordon in Augusta. Their first home was in the Territory of Alaska, where he was stationed at Ladd Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska. Clare and Maxine started farming in Wallingford in 1952, following his discharge from the Army. In 1958 they moved to Ringsted to continue farming. Clare also served as rural mail carrier for 17 years. Clare loved family vacations, fishing at Menagha, Minn., trips to Branson, Mo., trips to see children and grandchildren, and family reunions with singing, as music was such a special part of his life.

He was a member of Ringsted Legion Post, Wallingford Lutheran Church and Iowa Rural Letter Carrier Association.

Clare passed away Tuesday, Aug. 15 at the Lutz Nursing Home in Fairmont while his son, David, was singing to him. He is survived by wife Maxine.

Their marriage was blessed with four children: Mary Jane (Fred) Jensen, Kathryn (Joel) Meyer, David (Cindy) and Steven (Nora), grandchildren: Kari, Kristin, Kimberly, Michael, Karen and Sara, step grandchildren: Sandy, Stacy and Shilah and great grandchildren: Haley, Henry and Serenity.

He is also survived by sisters Carol Kropf and Lenora Kropf, several nieces and nephews, including special niece Jeanne Skattebo Handeland.

Clare is preceded in death by his parents, brother Earnest, sister-in-law Mary M. Skattebo, sister Margaret Gunderson, brothers-in-law LeRoy Gunderson, Richard Kropf and Duane Kropf, nephews, Robert and Doug Gunderson, James Skattebo, and niece Sandra Ackerman.
