ELC repels Rebels

August 23, 2017

Tied 9-9 to open the first set, it looked like it could be a long night for Estherville Lincoln Central and Sioux Central in the season-opening volleyball match on Tuesday.

However, the Midgets got the next sideout and Kendall Evans served the next nine points in a 10-0 run that included four aces by Evans and a block from McKayla Howard. The visiting rebels also made three straight errors-either hitting the ball in the net or out of bounds-to end the run before finally coming up with a kill.

But the tone was set for the rest of the evening as ELC took that first set 25-13, won the second set 25-6 and the third 25-12.

"We came together as a team, but we kind of had a slow start," said ELC senior McKayla Howard.

In the second set, ELC led 7-4 when it put together another 10-0 run, this time with Brianna Fix at the service line, before cruising to the 25-6 victory.

After taking an early 8-2 lead in the final set, ELC's co-coaches Jean Jensen and Keija Evans were able to get all the varsity some playing time.

"It was nice we got to work other people in," said Howard.

Sioux Central struggled with serve reception as ELC had 16 ace serves on the night. Evans and Brianna Fix each had six, while Howard and Lindsey Jensen had two apiece.

Evans needed just four ace serves to set the career school record in that category. Allie Sievert (2009-2012) held the old record with 95 ace serves. Evans now has 101. Evans also holds the season record in ace serves in a season after recording 71 last year.

As a team, ELC served at 91 percent with Evans going 22-of-22 and Fix going 14-of-16.

Offensively, ELC pounded out 24 kills led by Vanessa Woelber with eight while Dania Ponce Diaz had five and Howard had four. Evans had 18 set assists nad Fix had three.

Defensively, ELC finished with 35 digs led by Jensen with 11, Woelber with seven and Evans with five. Howard had three of the team's 10 blocks.

ELC (1-0) travels to a triangular in Milford on Tuesday to take on host Okoboji and Spirit Lake.

In B action, ELC defeated Sioux Central 25-19, 25-23.

The ELC freshman team won 25-23, 25-9.
