SPIRIT LAKE - The Estherville Lincoln Central Jazz Band traveled to the Iowa High School Music Association State Jazz Band Contest in Spirit Lake last Wednesday evening and came home with a Superior rating.

"I was very pleased with their performance," said ELC band director Laura Giebler. "The judges provided some good suggestions to apply to our upcoming performances and were very complimentary on our use of style and articulations.

"One judge said, 'This band does a good job of interpreting the jazz styles and different articulation figure in all of the tunes. You spent some time on that, Bravo on a job well done!'"

They also commented that the soloists performed very well.

"This year we have some soloists that are doing solo improvisation for the first time (Brianna Fix, Camden McKenney, and Allison Young)," said Giebler. "This is not an easy thing to do and I commend them for working hard and having the confidence required to do an improvisational solo."

ELC's program is as follows:

n Six By Six - written by Doug Beach; Soloists were - Brianna Fix (Alto Sax) Allison Young (Trumpet) Camden McKenney ( Trombone ) and Joseph Sexe (Trumpet)

n Back In Time - written by Pat Metheny arranged by Bob Curnow; Soloist was Emily Herum

n No Problema - written by Larry Neeck; Soloists were Katherine Johnson (Alto Sax) Joseph Sexe (Trumpet) and Logan Newhouse (Drum Set)

"The judges were especially impressed with Emily Herum's solo and commented on her excellent tone and vibrato," said Giebler. "One judge said, 'She is truly a treasure!' Another commented on the excellent improvisational skills of Joseph Sexe, Katherine Johnson, and Logan Newhouse."

The ELC Jazz Band's next performance will be at the NCIBA District Jazz Band Festival on Feb. 19 at the Wilcox Performing Arts Center in Algona at 7 p.m.
