ORANGE CITY - Three year ago, two Estherville Lincoln Central juniors and four freshmen worked together to qualify for the state golf tournament.

Those four freshmen have spent the last four years trying to get back to those heights.

Now seniors, Trey Jacobson, Jacob Bosch, Hunter Wheatley and Collin Wodtke will return to the state tournament-along with junior Blake Miller and sophomore Izaak Sander-after finishing second at the Class 2A District Meet in Orange City on Thursday.

"Unbelievable team effort!" said ELC coach Dave Van Roekel. "This group of young men basically put themselves through a five hour high wire act today. They wobbled several times, but in the end, the grit they showed to earn their state tournament berth was amazing."

Playing at Landsmeer Golf Course, Kuemper Catholic won with a 318 while ELC finished with a 328-three strokes ahead of third-place Sheldon. Just the top two teams advance to state.

For the Midgets, Wheatley stepped up, carding a 77 to finish fourth overall. Miller shot an 80 while Jacobson shot 86 and Wodtke shot 86.

"Hunter started well, hit a rough patch, then birdied three of his last four holes on his way to his fourth place medalist finish," said Van Roekel. "Blake was steady all day, and once again left us hanging in the clubhouse waiting for his results, as we knew he was in pretty good shape with six holes to play.

"Trey had an extremely difficult front nine, then pulled himself together to fire a more Trey-like 39 on the back nine," the coach said. "Collin was pretty steady with the clubs all day, despite having some putting woes, but just kept grinding all day.

Non-counting scores were a 94 from Sander and a 95 by Bosch.

"Izaak and Jacob would have preferred to have had better days, but they became the biggest cheerleaders as their teammates made their way into the clubhouse," said Van Roekel. "In the end, all this grit and determination would be just three shots good enough to earn the state tournament berth in Marshalltown next week.

"I couldn't possibly be more proud of a group of young men, or more happy for them, as they had plenty of opportunities to cash it in today, but they just love to grind, and they love to compete," he continued I'm super excited for the opportunity that awaits them in Marshalltown!"
