Quilters do part to honor veterans

May 29, 2018
Estherville News

With the traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall coming to Estherville and Emmet County June 22-24, a few local women thought it would be especially meaningful to combine a Quilts of Valor presentation with the traveling wall.

The group has had an overwhelming response to their project as they now have over 100 volunteers from Emmet County and beyond.

They have quilters making quilts, long arm quilters donating their expertise, and many others volunteering to sew bindings, labels and help in any way they can. Volunteers are from throughout the county and beyond. The quilt shops in the area have been extremely supportive and offered discounts to those making Quilts of Valor.

The traveling wall is scaled to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C. This Traveling Memorial stands as a reminder of the great sacrifices made during the Vietnam War. It was made for the purpose of helping heal and rekindle friendships and to allow people the opportunity to visit loved ones in their hometown who otherwise may not be able to make the trip to Washington. The wall travels coast to coast and border to border. The focus is on the Vietnam War Veterans. Unfortunately, upon their return after serving in the war, these vets were not met by cheering crowds, but instead by protestors yelling.

That is where the Quilts of Valor come in. This quilt presentation, for many, will be their first tactile form of a thank you for their service, as most were never even verbally thanked. This Emmet County Quilt Group is pleased to be combining their first distribution of Valor Quilts with the Vietnam Memorial Wall in honor and thanks for the Emmet County Vietnam Veterans. The presentation will be 2 p.m., Saturday, June 23. To date, over 90 quilts are completed. Of these, over 55 will be presented during this celebration.

Upon requests from many, a Quilt of Valor Quilt Show will be held on Friday, June 22 from
