Events begin Thursday; parade is 10:30 a.m. Saturday

When you think of Graettinger you think of its annual Labor Day celebration, which is the oldest Labor Day Celebration in the state. 2018 also marks Graettinger's Quasquicentennial which is a celebration of 125 years. Graettinger's motto is "small town big heart."

Graettinger had its start in the 1880s by the building of the Burlington, Cedar Rapids, and Northern Railway through that territory. The land was originally owned by Dr. Alois Graettinger who was a German physician who had immigrated to Milwaukee, Wis.. He gave the land to the railway under the condition that the town were to be named after him.

In an article in the Graettinger Times from April 30, 1931 that on the west side of town on the hill was a lake. This was there in the 1890s and then was filled in and sold off to people as choice lots. In 1893 the average wage was $2.50 per day- a far cry from what it is now.

Today Graettinger is home to many businesses like Energy Panel Structure, Bank Plus, Daybreak Foods Inc., and many others.

The celebration will begin on Thursday, June 21 with bingo, a euchre tournament and a free movie in the park, and end on Sunday, June 24 . The Quasquicentennial parade will be on Saturday, June 23 starting at 10:30 a.m. Following the parade the White Horse Patrol Riders will be at the elevator lot offering free rides. Also that evening will be a live band and beer garden at Main Street stage.
