The Emmet County Board of Supervisors held a public hearing for a new confinement construction in Section 34 of Center Township. The applicant for the new site is BDEM Livestock, LLC. Mark, Kari, Blake, Eric & Sonja Gjerde attended the meeting. The Gjerde family operates the farm on which the confinement will be located.

Mark Gjerde said, "We are trying to keep the family going by bringing a new generation in."

Kent Krause, representing Pinnacle, said, "What we are doing Is new construction, building two buildings on 435th Ave., holding 4,992 head of pigs, with manure pits below the building." The operation will be a wean-to-finish site with two groups of pigs each year.

Krause said the site will produce 1.3 million gallons of manure per year. The manure will be injected out of the facility.

The site earned 505 points on the Master Matrix. The number required to pass is 440. The supervisors approved the project and forwarded the letter of recommendation to the Department of Natural Resources.

In other business, the supervisors approved the reappointments of Robert Schacherer, Deb Tietje and Doug Welbig to the Emmet County Zoning Board, with terms ending July 1, 2023.
