Begun in 1948 and held on the Fourth of July since 1971, the flight breakfast has been a staple of Emmet County for these many years. This year's event is 7-11 a.m. at the municipal airport, located about three miles east of Estherville on Highway 9.

Good weather determines how many planes come for the event each year. The normal for the past few years is around 40 to 50.

Estherville Chamber Director Lexie Ruter said during her term, the breakfast drew about 60 planes one year.

This year's breakfast includes the usual of pancakes, eggs, sausage and beverage.

Ruter reports for this year the chamber has ordered 42 bottles of syrup, nine cases of pancake mix, 18 cases of sausage, 24 tubs of margarine, 2,000 plates, 2,800 napkins and five large containers of coffee and 45 gallons of orange juice. The eggs are donated by Estherville Foods.

"We have run out before, but fortunately we have to great grocery stores that can help us out," Ruter said, citing Hy Vee and Fareway.

One year, Ruter said they ran out of sausage and the grocery stores helped with frozen sausage links.

Volunteers from the Estherville Wa Tan Ye Club, Estherville Rotary and Estherville Kiwanis groups sell tickets and serve up the meal.

Ruter said this year's event includes free face painting and temporary tattoos done by youth from Forest Ridge, as well as Estherville Lincoln Central students seeking Purple Cord volunteer hours.

Roy Gage will offer Pony Rides. Also, the Black Knights Car Club will have vehicles on display.

Also, the Northwest Iowa Jazz Band will perform at 9 a.m.

Plane rides are available for purchase at the airport.

Initial forecast for the Fourth of July in Emmet County is warm and mostly sunny.
