Warriors rally past Titans

Lightning halts game on Monday, finished Wednesday

TERRIL - North Union and Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire needed three days and eight innings to decide a winner.

The two teams began playing Monday evening, as the host Titans took a 5-0 lead when lightning halted play in the third inning. The two teams agreed to finish the contest Wednesday morning with the Warriors mounting a furious rally to tie the game at 7-7 in the seventh inning.

In the eighth inning, North Union's Shelby Fraker drew a leadoff walk and scored from first base on a two-out double by Emily Meyer to left-center field.

The Titans went down in order in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the Warriors won 8-7.

GT/RA started well Monday with those five runs coming in the second inning, which included a two-RBI double by Sierra Kluever and an RBI single by Madison Hough, along with a Warrior error.

North Union scored three runs in the fifth inning, all with two outs.

GTRA answered with two in the bottom of the fifth to lead 7-3.

After a scoreless sixth inning, North Union began its rally in the seventh with three straight singles by Maddie Rolling, Ariel Olson and Shawna Person to load the bases. Rolling scored on a groundout by Vanessa Von Bank and another run scored on a Titan error. After a walk to Kaylee Tirevold reloaded the bases, pinch runner Maggie Engelby stole home in a lapse of focus by the Titan defense. GTRA catcher threw to second to try to get an out and Meyer came home to tie the game at 7-7.

Shawna Person earned the win on the mound for North Union while Hailee Ebel took the loss for GTRA. Emily Meyer started for North Union, giving up seven runs (three earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Person gave up one hit and one walk with one strikeout in 3 1/3 innings.

At the plate, Meyer was 2-4 with a double and two RBIs, Person and Vanessa Von Bank each were 2-5 with an RBI, Ariel Olson was 2-4 and Hope Steinberger was 1-4 with a double. Cassie Beadle, Kaylee Tirevold and Sam Nielsen each had an RBI.

North Union (14-16 overall) begins the Class 2A playoffs next Wednesday against Sioux Central in Swea City. Game time is 7 p.m.

GTRA (12-15 overall) was back in action Wednesday evening at Okoboji. The Titans host Estherville Lincoln Central Friday in Terril.

On Tuesday, North Union defeated visiting Northwood-Kensett 12-2 in five innings.

Emily Meyer pitched all five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

North Union pounded out 12 hits with Hope Steinberger going 2-4 with a double and two RBIs, Kaylee Tirevold was 2-2 with an RBI, Ariel Olson and Shawna Person each were 2-3 with two RBIs, Vanessa Von Bank was 1-3 with two RBIs, Olivia Von Bank was 1-4 with an RBI and Cassie Beadle and Maddie Rolling each were 1-3.
