Books on the bus starting in G-T

It seemed like a simple idea: a bucket of books on each school bus for students to read during the rides to and from school.

Kala Hoffman of Graettinger saw the idea on the blog "Scary Mommy" in late July and decided to gather the buckets and the books to make it happen.

The idea originated from a special education teacher in Arkansas who wanted to create a culture of reading on the daily bus route. On her bus, when students board the bus they can get up to three books. After they read those, they can share with students around them, then put them back in the bucket on the way out the door.

The culture of reading has happened on buses with buckets. Older students read to younger students, younger students read to older students, and it grew a step further to special guest readers, usually a middle school or high school student, picking out a book, sitting on the front seat, and reading it over the speaker to the whole bus.

Hoffman started collecting books on a Facebook post, and said she probably has enough pledges of books to start. The next step is to add the buckets and the reading culture will be on for Graettinger-Terril elementary students.

Hoffman is wife and mother of two, and is office manager at Bohl's Small Engine & Marine and an alumna of Graettinger High School. Hoffman said she hoped publicizing the effort would spread the idea to other schools in the area.

Numerous local residents donated or offered to donate books and buckets to the effort. Hoffman said she is grateful to all who came forward.
