Young Midgets battle in season-opening loss

Third-game rally comes up short against Rebels

With several young players who haven't played in a varsity match, Estherville Lincoln Central played well at times against Sioux Central in the season opener on Tuesday.

However the Rebels, who finished 10-15 a year ago, returned many of their key players this season and it showed. The visitors pulled away in each of the first two sets and then held on in the third for the 25-15, 25-17, 25-21 victory over the Midgets.

"Tuesday was a good learning experience for us," said ELC coach Jean Jensen. "We have a lot of girls that have never seen playing time on the varsity court before or very little playing time. We just have to figure out who fits where."

ELC played its best volleyball in the third set after falling behind 15-2. ELC's 16-10 run to end the match wasn't quite enough.

"We were happy how the girls came back the third game after being down by a lot, so it was nice to see them fight for each point," Jensen said. "Sioux Central was a good team and played a very good game against us."

ELC senior Dania Ponce-Diaz and senior Sam Norton, two returning players from last year, led the ELC attack with eight and five kills, respectively. Brenna Evans had four kills.

In the back-row, Ponce-Diaz led ELC with nine digs while Hailey Cody had six and Norton had five. Serving, Kendyl Ruschy was 9-of-10 and Cody was 5-of-5.

"Dania played an all-around good game," said Jensen.

Madielynn Mueller and Taylor Krager led the Sioux Central attack with five kills apiece. Krager and Jenna Jessen each had three blocks.

ELC (0-1 overall) travels to Milford next Tuesday for the Okoboji Tournament.
