Spurgin to open new pharmacy

Andy Spurgin and business partner Josh Borer partnered with a group of local investors to bring a community-owned pharmacy to Estherville. After serving as aa staff pharmacist at Estherville Drug, which closed after 98 years in July, Spurgin visited Borer's Rex pharmacy in Atlantic, Spurgin developed a vision to offer high-quality services in the form of an independent pharmacy in Estherville.

Spurgin cited Lyle Hevern of Estherville Area Partnership for Growth and Brian Dalziel of Northwest Iowa Corridor to structure an offer that was sent out ot local investors. With the group of angel investors, Spurgin is set to open in the former Godfather's Pizza building, 1804 Central Ave. Renovation has begun with the former party room becoming space for private consultations and immunizations, and the overall floor plan opening up for counter area.

Estherville Pharmacy will offer medication synchronization, rural and in-town delivery, vaccination services, Medicare Part D counseling, and other services. Compounding will be sent out. Spurgin said, "We want to work with patients, area healthcare providers, and community stakeholders to improve the health in the Estherville area."

A 2004 graduate of Estherville Lincoln Central, Spurgin received his bachelor's degree at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. When he decided that a career in pharmacy was his path, he returned to Estherville and took some necessary courses at Iowa Lakes Community College. He was accepted to the University of Iowa in 2009 and wrapped up his schooling in 2013.

Spurgin returned to Estherville in 2018 when he took a position with Estherville Drug.
