Lawsuit filed over climbing wall fall at U of Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A former student who was injured when he fell from a rock climbing wall at the University of Iowa has sued the state.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen ( ) says Spencer Bean, of Highland Park, Illinois, last week filed the lawsuit in Johnson County District Court.

In the lawsuit Bean says the university was negligent because it failed to provide proper supervision over climbers, failed to properly train climbing wall participants and failed to monitor and test the climbing wall's belayers on belaying equipment.

An attorney for Bean, Martin Diaz, says Bean fell when something failed with the device that is supposed to prevent falls. Documents say Bean suffered two crushed vertebrae. The fall occurred in November 2012.

University spokesman Tom Moore says the university is prohibited from discussing pending litigation.
