ESTHERVILLE–The Emmet County Conference Board on Tuesday night decided to interview one of four candidates who submitted applications for the county assessor’s position.

Former assessor Barb Alig left the position as of Dec. 31, 2007.

The four candidates were interviewed by the examining board, comprised of Michelle Nicoson, Susan Mueller and Scott Taylor. Nicoson said two candidates worked in the Dickinson County Assessor’s Office while another came from the Osceola County Assessor’s Office and one from the Hancock County Assessor’s Office.

She said the candidate from Osceola was only interested in a sharing agreement.

Emmet County Board of Supervisors chairman Alan Madden said he had inquired with the Iowa Department of Revenue to determine whether the assessor’s position could be shared. He said the department passed the question on to the Iowa Attorney General’s office. He added indications were an opinion would be forthcoming that the assessor’s position could not be shared.

The top recommendations were the candidates from Dickinson County. Nicoson said of those two, one indicated a willingness to relocate to Emmet County. She added “both were getting glowing recommendations.”

The board decided to interview the Dickinson County candidate willing to relocate. Board members also decided the starting salary should be $40,000 annually, with a 4 percent raise after June 20 and two weeks of paid vacation.

The board will meet with the candidate 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, in the board room at the Emmet County Courthouse.

Alig had a salary of $58,045. The candidate the board is interviewing has five years of experience.
