SPIRIT LAKE — Tastes ran from ‘Bridezilla’ to a dreamlike ‘Winter Wonder Wedding’ during the annual interschool competition Monday at Faust Institute in Spirit Lake. The theme was Fantasy Wedding and Faust teams from both Spirit Lake and Storm Lake competed.

A total of nine teams with 27 students competed. Each team was given one hour to do a complete wedding makeover with a live female model. Local students competing included Kim Paplow of Estherville, Bobbi Mittrucher of Okoboji, and Hannah Mogan of Lake Park.

Paplow’s team took second place with their theme, Winter Wonder Wedding.

According to Justin Latham, Faust director, the competition is part of the students’ curriculum.

“It’s our one big school competition,” Latham said, noting that 80 percent of the teams will go on to state competition.

A panel of judges from the cosmetology industry judged each model then met with students to suggest what they could do for state competition. Members of the top three teams locally received medals.

In last year’s state competition, Faust placed first in individual competition, as well as fifth, fourth, second, and first in team competition. The top three finishers at the state level are awarded $600, $300, and $100, respectively.

High-school students with an interest in the cosmetology industry also attended.
