This Valentine’s Day, give blood

By Staff | Feb 11, 2008

This Valentine’s Day, you can really prove that you love others by giving them your blood.

The Estherville community blood drive will be held from 12:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14 at the Duhigg Center Gym at 902 Central Ave. in Estherville. The blood drive is sponsored by Northwest Federal Savings Bank.

Donna Day-Templin, blood drive coordinator, said when Feb. 14 was offered to her as a date for the local blood drive, “I said ‘Oh what a perfect day. A valentine is for love.'”

And so the date was set.

Day-Templin coordinates four blood drives a year while Avera Holy Family Health has two, one each in June and in December. That schedule allows those who want to give at every blood drive since persons must wait 56 days between times they donate. The October blood drive is sponsored by Iowa Lakes Community College.

To donate, donors must be at least 17 and weigh at least 110 pounds and have no communicable diseases. Donors give a health history each time they donate.

As for the upper age limit, said Day-Templin, there is none.

“There is no upper age limit. As long as they’re healthy and want to, great,” Day-Templin said.
