Snowmobile accident claims life
A Graettinger man is dead following a snowmobile accident which occurred on Saturday, Feb. 16 on 370th Avenue near 270th Street in Emmet County.
Sheriff Larry Lamack said the incident occurred at approximately 5:40 p.m. The initial call advising of the accident involving two snowmobiles said one driver was trapped and seriously injured.
Officers with the Iowa Highway Patrol and Emmet County Sherrif’s Department arrived on scene and determined that Earl Westergard, 46, of Graettinger was heading north in the east ditch of 370th Avenue when he went over a field approach. Landing on the other side of the approach, his snowmobile was stuck in the snow.
A second snowmobile being driven by Ryan Peterson, 32 of Estherville, was following behind Westergard.
The sheriff said the Peterson snowmobile went over the same field approach and Westergard was pinned when the Peterson snowmobile struck.
The Graettinger Ambulance Service transported Westergard to Avera Holy Family Health where he died.
Peterson was transported to Holy Family and was treated for a large cut on his left leg.
Lamack said the investigation of the accident is continuing.
