Lightning kills Curlew man

A unfortunate weather-related incident claimed the life of a rural resident in Palo Alto County Wednesday morning.

According to information received from the Palo Alto Sheriff’s Department, Galen Smith, 20, of rural Curlew was struck by lightning shortly after 9 a.m. It was reported he was assisting his father in the yard at the time.

The communication center logged the call at 9:32 a.m. Officials from the sheriff’s department, Palo Alto Ambulance Service and the Mallard First Responders from Smith unresponsive. He was transported to the Palo Alto County Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Smith was a mechanical engineering major at Iowa State University
