Spirit Lake to help provide flood relief

SPIRIT LAKE – The Cedar Rapids flood relief effort was a main topic at the Spirit Lake City Council meeting Tuesday evening.

Dwight Dohlman, public works director, is organizing the effort. Dohlman is a former employee of the city of Cedar Rapids and still owns a home there. So far, $1,300 has been collected. Also being accepted are cleaning supplies, personal hygiene products, diapers and sanitizers. The deadline for donating is Friday, June 27. Donations may be made at Spirit Lake City Hall.

The animal control ordinance was discussed again. It was recommended that the city attorney make changes to the ordinance. The topic will then be addressed at the next council meeting.

In other action, the council:

n Issued up to $4,800,000 General Obligation Loan Notes.

n Took additional action for the loan authorization and disbursement agreement and the issuance of GO Capital Loan Notes.

n Authorized a form of loan and disbursement agreement by and between City of Spirit Lake and the Iowa Finance Committee for the same loan notes.

n Heard an update from the RIDES executive director.

n Granted permission to place four “Character Counts” banners in the city.

n Passed the resolution approving the city-wide fuel supplier.

n Passed a resolution declaring an official intent to issue debt to reimburse the city for certain expenditures paid in connection with specified projects.

n Set a public hearing for the 2008 PVC Paving Improvements Project.

n Set a public hearing for the 2008 Spirit Lake Library parking lot improvements project.

n Set a public hearing for the 2008 Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation Project.

n Passed a resolution approving employee pay adjustments.
