An observant Emmet County landowner found what looked like an abandoned vehicle on his farm property and saved a life Wednesday.

According to Emmet County Sheriff Larry Lamack, the landowner arrived at the sheriff’s office at 4:01 p.m. to report finding a car parked on the north side of the grain bin on his property located on the east side of Highway 4 north of Estherville.

He told the sheriff he approached the vehicle but didn’t see anybody inside.

“But he heard a noise,” Lamack said. Peering inside the unlocked auto, the landowner saw a hole torn through the back seat.

“Upon looking closer, he discovered a person was locked in the trunk,” he said.

The sheriff’s department arrived on scene. After speaking with the individual, keys were found and Lamack opened the trunk.

“We found a 70-year-old lady lying in the trunk. She was dehydrated and incoherent. The Estherville Ambulance Service transported her to Avera Holy Family Health.”

The sheriff added the Spirit Lake Police Department had notified all law enforcement an elderly woman was reported missing on Aug. 11.

“This was the lady found in the trunk,” he said, adding, “At this time no foul play is suspected.”
