Public health director hired
Armstrong native Kathy Preston has been named as the new director of Emmet County Public Health. She assumed the position Aug. 13.
Preston replaces Karen Moritz who has taken the position as Brown County public health director in New Ulm, Minn. Moritz will remain for a transitional period until Sept. 23.
Preston graduated from the Iowa Lakes Community College nursing program with an RN degree. She worked at Valley Vue care center in Armstrong before taking her most recent position as school nurse at Armstrong-Ringsted Community School where she has served for 15 years. She has been very active in the community, serving on many boards and committees, including Emmet County Kinship.
Preston will oversee the various county health programs including immunizations, home health, county preparedness, the antitobacco program, and breast and cervical cancer early detection. She oversees nine employees, including two staff nurses, business manager, secretary, and five health aides.
“I think Karen (Moritz) has done a really good job of letting the public know what’s available here and I’ll continue that,” Preston said. “The staff here is very experienced and very good.”
Preston reminds parents that children entering kindergarten and ninth grade need dental checkups and kindergartners also need lead testing.
Kathy and her husband, Mark, have three children: Autumn (Jared) Larsen, Mitchell (Amy) Preston with grandson Ethan, and Chelsea (Jordan) Reed.
Emmet County Public Health will also be participating in the Senior Health Fair Oct. 29 at the Estherville VFW. Contact Larry Sundall at 362-7431 for further information.
