Information from an alert Estherville business owner regarding forged check transactions led to the arrest of a Dickinson County resident.

According to Brent Shatto, Estherville police captain, the department was contacted on Aug. 27 when a local business received two forged checks.

“After the investigation, it was determined the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Lee Moberger of Spirit Lake, had been forging checks in Estherville at other business locations as well as the Lakes area in the last week,” the captain said.

The defendant was charged by Estherville police with seven counts of forgery, all Class D Felonies. “The defendant was also arrested by the Spirit Lake Police Department on charges related to other forgeries. He was transported to the Dickinson County Jail.

“The defendant will be transported to the Emmet County Jail following the disposition of his charges in Dickinson County,” Shatto said. “He will return to this county to appear on the seven local charges.”

Agencies assisting the Estherville Police Department with the investigation were the Okoboji Police Department and Spirit Lake Police Department.

“The outcome of this investigation would not have been possible without the assistance of alert business owners and employees who were able to provide us with the information needed to solve the case,” Shatto said.
