A 19-year-old Estherville resident was charged with third degree sexual assault, a Class C Felony, after Estherville police were contacted by a concerned parent in July.

Estherville Police Captain Brent Shatto Monday said, “On July 7, the father came to the Emmet County Law Enforcement Center to report his 13-year-old daughter was having sexual relations with a 19-year-old male.”

He said that following the investigation into the alleged sexual activity, police arrested Salvador Barajas and charged him with the offense.

“Barajas was placed in the Emmet County Jail and he appeared before the Emmet County magistrate. He was given a $13,000 cash bond.”

Police also obtained a Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold on the defendant due to his status as an illegal immigrant.

Shatto said Barajas remains in county lock-up on the cash bond and immigration hold.
