Estherville now has an acupuncture practitioner who does ear stapling for weight loss and smoking cessation.

Dr. Nancy Woods, formerly located at Moreau Chiropractic, has recently relocated her offices to Estherville Family Chiropractic at 508 W. Central Ave. A specialty of hers that has become increasingly popular is ear stapling to help patients with smoking cessation, weight loss and even sleep disorders.

According to Woods, stapling affects the accupressure points. The technology has been in the U.S. for 20 years. However, just lately it’s gained popularity. Woods said she tried it herself and lost 10 pounds.

“It definitely knocks down food cravings,” Woods said, noting that a person can eat just half a sandwich and feel full.

Woods says she has performed the procedure for about 60 patients for weight loss and four for smoking cessation.

Accupressure and accupuncture are not new. The Chinese have been using the methods for 2,500 years along with herbal remedies.

Woods underwent a 102-hour program at Northwest Health University in Bloomington, Minn., in order to be able to do the procedure. Her instructor from New York state said 3,500 hours of training are required there for certification to perform the procedure.

So how painful is it?

“If you get your ears pierced, it’s about like that,” Woods said.
