John Wittneben, whose name has been synonymous with public service in Estherville, will now serve as Ward II representative after being sworn in as the interim replacement for Joe Swisher Monday.

Wittneben will serve for one year after which time the seat will be up for election. Wittneben said Tuesday he was already planning on running for the council seat next year. “I had already decided I was going to run next year,” he said.

Wittneben, a professional surveyor and owner of Wittneben Surveying Inc., worked with the city trails committee three or four years ago and has been involved with many local organizations. He is current president of the Friends of Fort Defiance and past president of the Estherville Rotary.

An Estherville native, Wittneben lived here until he was 20 then worked with surveying crews throughout the country for 22 years before coming back to Estherville May 1997. He started Wittneben Surveying October 2001.

Wittneben said he looks forward to helping select a new city administrator to replace Steve Woodley who has announced his retirement. He also has a great interest in developing outdoor recreation in the city.
