Driver faces multiple charges

Three charges were lodged against a 21-year-old resident of Estherville who was involved in a single-car accident on Oct. 10 in Estherville.

The Iowa State Patrol and the Estherville Police Department have completed their investigation. As a result, Nicholas J. Erickson was charged with OWI, first offense; possession of a controlled substance-marijuana; and failure to maintain control. He was given citations to appear before Emmet County magistrate at a later date.

According to police records, the accident occurred at 3:39 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 4 and South First Street. Police officers responded to the scene and determined a vehicle driven by Erickson was traveling eastbound on South First Street. Police determined Erickson was traveling east on South First Street when the 1991 Buick Regal left the roadway and collided with the embankment on the east side of Highway 4.

The driver was taken by ambulance to Avera Holy Family Hospital and later flown to Sioux Falls, S.D.

At the time of the accident, the police department was assisted by the Estherville Ambulance and a deputy from the Emmet County Sheriff’s Department.
