Patriotic gesture

By Staff | Nov 15, 2008

Jack Hardy of the Iowa Great Lakes Rotary Club made a request Wednesday that the Spirit Lake City Council begin each meeting by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. With the economy in a slump and the nation waging two wars, the rotary club thought it would be a good time to show patriotism.

Hardy said the club would be making the same request to all 10 city councils in Dickinson County as well as the Dickinson County Board of Supervisors and the Spirit Lake School Board.

Councilmember Steve Balm asked Hardy if a Rotary member would come and lead the council in the Pledge.

The council adopted the resolution.

The council discussed the 19th street reconstruction project. The improvements would run from Hill Avenue to Jackson Avenue. Improvements include putting in diagonal parking at the bank, changing the intersection at Ithaca to a regular intersection, change the street lights to the same as on 23rd street and improve sewer and water to Keokuk.

The total project is estimated at $800,000 which includes engineering and contingencies.

The design also includes an alternate bid item for 19th Street from Jackson Avenue to Lincoln Avenue for a future project.

In other business, the council:

n Adopted the resolution to accept the City of Spirit Lake 2008 lighting improvement project.

n Approved the fiscal year 2008 city annual financial report.

n Approved an agreement with ACS for hardware and software licenses.

n Set the date for the public hearing for the amendment to the 2009 city budget for Dec. 9.
