Spirit Lake School Board: First meeting with new administration

By Staff | Jul 15, 2009

SPIRIT LAKE – The Spirit Lake School Board meeting had many firsts: the first of the new school year and the first for three new members of the administration, superintendent Dave Smith, elementary principal Shane Boeve and middle school principal Kevin Range.

Handbooks and year-end reports from all three buildings were discussed.

Changes to the elementary handbook include a change to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act notification. Unless otherwise notifed, the following directory information will be released about each child:

n Name.

n Address.

n Telephone listing.

n Whether the student is dual enrolled or in a home school assistance program.

n School sponsored programs.

n Annual yearbook.

n Honor roll/newsletter recognition.

Changes in deadline and specifications for requesting classes were also made.

Policy regarding truant students completing homework was changed in the middle school handbook. Other changes include unexcused absences policy, policy regarding students who fail the same class more than once and student visitor procedure.

One of the more important changes to the high school handbook includes the deletion of the final exam exemption policy. In the past, students with good attendance were rewarded with exemption from final exams. “All students will take all tests,” said principal Steve Ratzlaff regarding the new policy. If the tests are important enough to take two days out for them, then all students will take them, continued Ratzlaff.

The board approved the changes to all three handbooks.

New hires include Whytne Clancy and Jane Long for middle school special education, Rachel Berkland as varsity head volleyball coach, James Berkland as varsity assistant football coach and Rick Kent as substitute and activity bus driver. Rachel Berkland resigned from junior varsity volleyball position and James Berkland resigned as seventh grade volleyball position.

In other matters, the board:

n Approved open enrollment requests.

n Approved the Upper Des Moines Opportunity CACFP food agreements.
