Emmet County fair queen to be crowned

Seven candidates are vying for Emmet County fair queen and princess who will be crowned at the 4-H fashion review on the opening night of the fair Thursday, July 23.

All the contestants will receive a $500 scholarship from Iowa Lakes Community College. The fair queen will also receive a $100 savings bond from Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative.

In Emmet County, the fair princess and fair queen participate in many events during the fair, ride in local parades and participate in activities throughout the county to help advertise and promote the fair during her reign.

The 2008 reigning princess is Caitlin McConnell and the 2008 reigning queen is Jennie Mart who will also crown the 2009 queen.

The seven contestants interviewed with three judges Sunday, July 19 at the Sleep Inn and Suites in Estherville.

The 2009 contestants include the following young women.

Julie Wilson, 18, of Estherville is the daughter of Gary and Kayleen Wilson. She is a 2009 graduate of Estherville Lincoln Central High School and is active in the Lincoln Handy Helpers 4-H Club and at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Emily Lair, 16, of Estherville is the daughter of Russ and Tammy Lair. She attends Estherville Lincoln Central High School and has been active in 12 Mile Lakers, First Christian Church, 4-H and Youth Committee and the 4-H County Council.

Halley Fox, 16, of Ringsted is the daughter of Rick and Heather Fox. She attends Armstrong-Ringsted High School and is active in the Happy Hoof Beats 4-H Club.

Ashleigh Newkirk, 17, of Ringsted is the daughter of Brad and Theresa Newkirk. She attends Armstrong-Ringsted High School and participates in the Happy Hoof Beats 4-H Club and Ringsted Presbyterian Church.

Amanda Burt, 18, of Fenton is the daughter of Bob and Trish Burt. She is a 2009 graduate of Armstrong Ringsted High School and is a member of the Jack Creek Feeders 4-H Group.

Graye Farnum of Estherville is the daughter of Dr. David and Darci Farnum. She attends Estherville Lincoln Central High School and participates in the Estherville Experts 4-H Group, Emmet County 4-H Council and the Northwest Iowa Area Council.

Catherine Creech of Estherville is the daughter of Dr. James and Lois Creech. She attends Estherville Lincoln Central High School and participates in the Estherville Experts 4-H Club and Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Brittany Bortvit, 16, of Estherville is the daughter of Darryl and Sheila Bortvit. She attends Estherville Lincoln Central High School and is a member of the Estherville Experts 4-H Club.
