In 2005, the Estherville Fire Department’s annual “Fill the Boot” campaign raised $1,000 to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The amount continues to grow each year and on Labor Day 2009 (Monday), the firefighters collected $1,820 from passing motorists at the corner Central Avenue and First Street.

Whether it was the change of location (the firefighters usually collect from Central Avenue and Fifth Street), the beautiful day or the fact that vehicles must still use South First Street as a detour for Highway 4, this year’s collection was over $300 higher than the $1,488 collected in 2008.

The volunteers collected $1,212 in 2007 and $1,178 in 2006.

Firefighters are dedicated to saving lives and protecting people. Their alliance with MDA proves they are working to save lives and fighting to find a cure.

MDA helps children and adults who affected by any of 43 neuromuscular diseases covered by MDA’s comprehensive medical service and research program.

MDA receives no government funding and charges no fees to families served.
