SPIRIT LAKE – Spirit Lake police and the Dickinson County Attorney’s Office released the names of 18 people charged in the “Broken Arrow” undercover investigation at a press conference at the Dickinson County Courthouse Tuesday afternoon.

Police chief Jeff Hanson said the press conference was held because of rumors throughout the community about who was involved in the drug-related arrests.

Assistant County Attorney Melanie Summers Bauler says charges have been filed against 18 of 25 suspects in the case. She declined comment on the remaining seven, saying federal indictments are pending against at least some of them.

In a report released at the end of April by Cheif Hanson, 25 defendants were charged with over 50 felonies. The Spirit Lake Police Department was assisted by the Iowa Great Lakes Drug Task Force and also involved an Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and explosives Special Agent infiltrating a large network of drug and gun traffickers in the Lakes area.

Hanson said 28 to 30 officers from state and local departments assisted in the initial arrests which began at 7 a.m. April 27 and continued through 1 a.m. the next day. Hanson said the investigation was the largest he’s been a part of in his nearly 23 years in Spirit Lake.
