Lakefield stabbing results in death

LAKEFIELD, Minn. – An altercation between two men led to a fatal stabbing Thursday afternoon at a Lakefield nursing home.

At approximately 2:15 p.m., the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call from the Colonial Manor Nursing Home. Staff reported that a stabbing had occurred and stated the suspect fled.

The Lakefield Ambulance Service, Lakefield Police Department and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, Kenneth Collins Jr., 37, of Fulda, Minn., was found injured. He was transported via ambulance to the Sanford Jackson Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Nursing home staff identified the suspect as Tyron Collins, 38, of Jackson.

Collins was located by the Worthington Police Department near the city limits of Worthington on County Road 35. Police attempted to stop him but he evaded officers, crossing Highway 59. He subsequently crashed coming to rest on a service road adjacent to Highway 59.

Collins was then apprehended without incident and transported to the Sanford Worthington Regional Hospital. He was treated and placed under arrest by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office for second degree murder.

Collins was transported to the Jackson County Jail where he awaits formal charges from the Jackson County Attorney’s Office.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the Lakefield Police Department received the assistance of the Jackson and Worthington Police Departments, the Minnesota State Patrol and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
