Emmet County Sheriff Mike Martens reports that during the last STEP project (Special Traffic Enforcement Project) which began May 24 and concluded on June 6, the sheriff’s office issued 20 citations which included: one arrest for OWI, seven speed violations, one stop sign violation, one driving without a license, one registration violation, and two for failure to have control.
During this same project there were seven drug-related violations as a result of traffic enforcement efforts. There were also 37 warning citations issued. Of which 32 were for speed violations, one for improper passing, one for a stop sign violation, and three for equipment repair violations.
STEP projects are sponsored by the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau which provides equipment and overtime wages to agencies to enforce Iowa’s traffic laws. The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office’s goal in STEP is to protect the citizens by preventing tragedies on our highways.
