Additional housing assistance OK’d

SHELDON – Two more homes were approved for housing assistance – one a grant and another a loan – at the Northwest Iowa Regional Housing Trust Fund, Inc. monthly meeting in Sheldon.

The assistance brings to three the number of Emmet County homeowners who have benefitted from the program. The Northwest Iowa Regional Housing Trust Fund, Inc., is a regional housing trust whose mission is to help low-to middle-income people improve their homes.

In other business, the group reviewed bylaws and accomplishments for fiscal 2010. Those accomplishments include:

n July 2009. Approving the administrative plan with Northwest Iowa Planning and Development and developing a local math/fundraising plan.

n August 2009. Finalizing the Housing Assistance Plan.

n September 2009. Completing the certification process which includes finalizing the articles of incorporation, bylaws, resolution and letters of support, certifying board members and approving the mission statement.

n December 2009. Receiving approval of the state housing trust fund application. The trust was approved for a $268,989 grant.

n February 2010. Began marketing the program which includes a preparing a brochure and application forms and issuing a press release and letters to cities, counties and banks.

n April 2010. Receiving exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service. As a result, the trust was able to receive state and local funding. A press release was then made on funding and brochures and applications were distributed.

n May 2010. Applications were received from 42 homeowners and 16 were approved in May for $168,000.

n June 2010. An additional 13 applications were received, making 55 total. Also in June, the eligibility was approved on two additional applicants, making 18 total. Construction started on four homes.
