Emmet County residents will have the opportunity to wish deploying Guard members well when the local unit leaves Sunday.

A brief ceremony will be held 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 1 at the National Guard readiness center across from Iowa Lakes Community College on South 18th St. for members of Battery A. 1st Battalion, 194th Field Artillery unit. The armory doors open to the public at 10:30 a.m.

According to Gene Haukoos, community liaison for the Guard and readiness group, Guard members will board the bus at noon and the convoy will travel on 17th St. to Central then west to South First Street.

Local residents who want to be part of the sendoff can decorate storefronts, line up on Central and cheer for their departing family members, friends and loved ones.

Guard members will leave for training in Mississippi and California before deploying to Afghanistan for a one-year tour of duty.

Haukoos said information will be later available for Guard families on putting together care packages and for family group activities.

Everyone is encouraged to turn out to wish Guard members well on their latest deployment.

“Since 911 this is the third time these guys have gone,” Haukoos said.
