Volunteers sought for playground project

Volunteers are sought for assembling playground equipment for the new play area just west of the west wing of Demoney Elementary.

Principal Kris Schlievert said volunters are needed Aug. 13-14 for three shifts each day: 8 a.m. to noon, noon to four 4 p.m., and 4-8 p.m. Schlievert said 20 volunteers will be needed per session to erect the equipment on the first- and second-grade area just west of the the new Demoney Elementary addition. The Parent Action Team is putting in the playground.

Project support has come in the form of a $5,000 grant by Estherville Kiwanians and a $3,300 grant from the Emmet County Community Foundation. The total project cost is expected to reach $60,000 when completed.

Those who would like to volunteer for the project may call Schlievert at 362-2181 and leave their name, time at which they would like to volunteer and phone number. Work will take place rain or shine unless there is a threat of lightning, Schlievert said.

Volunteers should at at least 16. Students may earn Purple Cord hours for the project. Volunteers should bring gloves and a hat. The Parent Action Team will provide food and water.

Boland Recreation of Marshaltown will send a representative to lead the project.

Schlievert said the goal is to complete the project by Aug. 23. She said once the playground equipment is installed, pea gravel will be placed on the playground. A concrete basketball court with hoops will follow later.
