Kiwanians to collect PB&J for UDMO

By Staff | Mar 23, 2011

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches can be one of the best sandwiches ever for young people and adults. In fact, peanut butter contains seven of the eight essential amino acids and is widely considered a good substitute for meat, when meat is not available.

So, area Kiwanis are stepping forward to help the food pantries of Upper Des Moines Opportunity get a new supply of peanut butter and jelly. With the help of area residents and 10 grocery stories, Kiwanians will launch an effort soon to collect the items and stock the shelves of the UDMO Food Pantries in four counties. They are calling their campaign PB&J 4 UDMO.

Starting as early as Saturday, March 26, boxes will start appearing in the entry ways of these stores. Area residents are encouraged to purchase jars of peanut butter or jelly and drop them off in the boxes at those stores.

Stores participating in this effort include:

n Estherville Fareway and Hy-Vee

n Lake Park Buy-Rite

n Milford Buy-Rite

n Spencer Fareway, Hy-Vee and Walmart

n Spirit Lake Fareway, Hy-Vee and Walmart

On Kiwanis One Day, Saturday, April 2, Kiwanis members will wrap up the PB&J4 UDMO campaign with a three-hour ‘push’ for last minute contributions from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help encourage donations on that day.

On Monday, April 4, Kiwnanians will deliver the PB&J to the UDMO food pantry in their home county.

Kiwanis clubs which are joining the Kiwanis One Day effort include: Estherville Noon/NorthStar Knights; Lake Park;, Milford: Spencer Hy-Noon; Spencer Daybreakers; Spencer Golden K; Spencer After Five; Spencer High School Key Club; Spirit Lake Sunrise; Spirit Lake Builders Club; and Terril.
